Obituary
On July 28, 2020 Vickie Lee Hughes, mother of three children, passed away at the age of 67. Vickie was born on August 17, 1952 in the state of Iowa to George and Rose (Perry) Hughes. She graduated from high school at Lafayette Senior High in Missouri. She married and divorced Richard D. Smith, and they raised twins, Todd and Jessica. Later, Vickie gave birth to a daughter Elizabeth Hughes.
Vickie was preceded in death by her ex-husband Richard, mother Rose, and sister Pamela Hughes. She is survived by three children (Todd, Jessica, and Elizabeth) and three grandchildren (Hazel, Bryceson, and Fiona). She is also survived by her brother and seven sisters: Myrle Hughes, Ann Hanes, Marsha Gibson, Joan Maitilasso, Diana Guth, Nina Murphy, Mary O’Toole, and Patricia Ehlen as well as many nieces and nephews. Vickie was buried at the Burlington Green Cemetery in Burlington Green, NY thanks to the Delker & Terry Funeral Home in Edmeston, NY.
Vickie loved black coffee, reading books of all sorts, and taking care of plants. Possibly the only things that she loved more were babies. She was a bit of a baby whisperer and once put her granddaughter Fiona (Jessica’s daughter) to sleep singing “Hush Little Baby” over the phone. Her son Todd’s children, Hazel and Bryceson, adored her very much, and her sister Mary remembers all of Vickie’s help when Mary’s son Justin was born. If asked to describe her in one word, we would choose “spry.” Vickie was strong, stubborn, and independent. She struggled with mental illness for decades but did extraordinary things like camping out in the Southwest for a year on her own. Diana, her sister, remembers that she helped to organize a sit-in at her high school so the girls could be allowed to wear trousers.
She will be remembered and missed.
